A Good Name
Hello Readers. This one I was on the fence with posting. However, while it does have a little bit of a “preachy” feeling to it, pay attention to the overall message about my beloved industry. This is a sentiment I also share….

“A GOOD name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.” Proverbs 22:1
Solomon, the wisest man to ever live, had some great things to say in his life time. This verse is one of those great things.
I work in an industry that has taken some serious hits to its reputation lately. Members of congress have gone so far as to say that the current housing crisis and the subprime mortgage debaucle has been caused solely by “the evil mortgage broker”. The media have jumped on the bandwagon and made it very difficult to do business as a mortgage broker. To some extent, America has begun to believe what they see and hear and read. How does one keep battle the forces a work to destroy what I believe is a very important sector of our beloved real estate community?
It was a lesson that I am glad I learned. You see, I agree that there have been and still are some people who do what I do that have given credance to the claims that mortgage brokers take advantage of people. I see it every day when customers tell me that another broker has promised them a loan that I know from experience and training has no chance of ever being cleared to close. All I can do is tell them that they are being misled and show them the facts but it doesn’s always work.
I have come to the conclusion that all I can do is do what is right and rely on that to build my reputation and let God take care of the rest. It has begun to work and I thank God for that. People are beginning to see that I will not promise the moon and only deliver dust.
Someday, and I hope it will be soon, the “bad seed” in my industry will be gone and those of us who rely on a Good Name for our business will be the only ones left. I will be so thankful when that day arrives.
“A good name is better than precious ointment…” Ecclesiastes 7:1
